Ckyra for President!

Third year Kingston University media student Ckyra campaigned for Student President this year. The votes start on the 11th March till the 14th March at 1pm.

Ckyra comes from a Caribbean and Asian background and has been involved in many roles in the University: “the President for the Afro-Caribbean society, ‘Social Secretary and Fundraiser’ for the Cheerleading society and Student Rep for my Media course”.

Her aim for her campaign is to make Kingston University more student focussed. Part of her campaign is to bring more microwaves to the campuses. She explained: “the cost of living is hard enough for students, canteen prices are too high so students should be able to microwave their food and still have time for break.” She told us how she had conducted some research and waited in the que to microwave her food and found she was spending far too long queuing instead of enjoying her break.

To combat this, her aim is to dedicate a section to have at least seven microwaves and provide kettle usage to. She explained: “I also have plans of bringing vending machines on to campus which feature students’ accessories like: pens, notepads, chargers, usb, hairbands, deodorant, gloves etc.. As well as a student food bank where students can donate items and pick up items.”

She has also focussed her campaign on introducing more Icebreakers to those newly starting the University: “ Why is there no support when you first join, I don’t know about you, but when I first started I didn’t know anyone, me and my class mates did not start talking to each other until year 3 when we were forced to do a whole class project.” Her aim is to create ‘Course Icebreakers’ where at the start of your course, you will be doing activities/games to have a real introduction to the people around you.
