The votes are in... and we have a new President
Student President Election 2024
On the 14th of March, Abdullah Khan, last year’s Vice President, has been voted in as this year’s new President of Kingston University.
Since the 15th of February, students had been nominating themselves to be suitable candidates for several roles in the student union, one of those being the new president. Workshops were designed in late February to help those who wanted to run for roles like this and there was a total of a whopping 32 candidates running for president. Voting officially began on the 12th to the 14th of March where students could vote online and International Business Management student Abdullah Khan, won over student’s votes.
“I knew I could do this”, said President Abdullah Khan, when interviewed over a video call.
When Khan was asked on why he wanted to be president he said: “I came as an international student last year, and after a month or two I didn’t feel connected with the people at this University”.
“To better this experience, I wanted to meet more diverse students, and add more inclusivity for not just myself but for everyone. That was the beginning of this journey for me.”
Abdullah Khan had recent initiatives to help with the cost-of-living crisis for students when he was Vice President earlier on this year and was the leading major researcher.
“I wanted to continue doing this project, I just knew three months was not going to be enough time. What if the next president did not want to continue this project”, he said.
As Vice President, he had successfully done many things for the advantage of students such as helping students find part-time jobs and job placements after university and helping international students with VISA issues. He even overturned the decision of assignment submission time to midnight rather than 5pm.
His plans now he is president is to continue his campaigns when vice president. “Other candidates had no action plan if they were to win this position. I am going to complete what I already started.”
