Two Teams. One Winner.

On Tuesday 26th March the Kingston Netball team travelled to Central London, Farringdon, to play against City University for the Varsity tournament.

Varsity is an annual event where Kingston University play a total of 20 matches against City University with a variety of sports that is spread across two days. KU students are ready to win as many points they can to win the Varsity cup, as each game that is won is worth points.

Chloe Edwards, the Goal Attack for the KU team, told us about the day and gave us a first-hand insight on to how the game went.

The team did a lot of warm up exercises to get their bodies ready for a big game: “We started off with the usual ritual of lunges, running, squats and then side steps, and then shooters practice shooting, and the others do ball skills”.

The game started at 5pm and it was an hour-long match against a very competitive team. The KU Netball team ended up losing 46-51 to them, but Chloe explained how the game was quite unfair as “the umpires were biased towards City with calling contact and obstruction”. The supporters of City would also boo the KU team when they were shooting during the match, which was very distracting for the team and overall, not good sportsmanship.

The KU team has been preparing for the two matches for the last couple months, playing against each other every week and getting their skills to the best they can be.
